Gum Disease May Increase Risk for Severe COVID complications

Surprise surprise—Gum disease has been implicated in potentially increasing the chances of a person getting severe COVID infections and complications. Recent studies show that increased virus particles in saliva and periodontitis are linked to higher incidence of death in COVID-19 patients. This new information also sheds some light on why some people are more likely to have severe lung complications than others with diseases gums allowing more of the virus to move directly into the bloodstream. This information comes as no surprise as it is already known that periodontal health is linked to cardiovascular health and other systemic diseases.
