The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) said on Thursday it would release a plan within one year to ban menthol-flavored cigarettes and all flavored cigars, according to reports by Reuters and The Hill. The FDA had a Thursday deadline to respond to a lawsuit from public health and antismoking groups aimed at forcing it to act. A March 3 letter to the agency from the ADA and other like-minded stakeholders, including the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, said: “The public health and medical community have long been united in calling on FDA to use its authority under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act to issue product standards ending the manufacture and sale of flavored tobacco products.”
